Basketball?
To be honest, if you are trying to develop large muscles, you had best limit your cardio (basketball would count as cardio). That is not to say that you can't play at all. It's just that you don't want to burn your calories doing cardio. You want to use your calories to build muscle. You need to eat a lot, lots of protein. Good healthful natural foods. Get lots of sleep and drink lots of milk.
On an NBA team, 12 are active in a game, but they are allowed to have 15
um i personally think that they vary differently as you go up higher in the level of your play. ill list the pros and cons of wearing basketball shoes and running shoes.
basketball shoes help protect your ankles, the most vulnerable part of your body when you jump for a rebound, go for a layup, or jump in general. basketball shoes also sorta help stabilize your feet for a shot.
but basketball shoes are generally bigger and heavier, and because protection is a double edged sword, it avoids making quick, long strides on your first dribble. and with basketball shoes being heavier, it might slightly impede your jump height and your speed and agility.
running shoes are generally light and provides you with slightly better speed, agility and quickness compared to basketball shoes. but running shoes are considerably more vulnerable to your ankles... compared to basketball shoes.
so the skinny is that when i just play leisure basketball, i wear running shoes because you're not going to need to move around as much (rebounds in particular) and running shoes are better insulated so your feet dont stink as much (is it just me?). and also, its the shoe youre usually wearing.
but in competition basketball, i really prefer to wear the basketball shoes because no matter how good you are, if your ankles are busted, you cant play. and i dont wanna take that risk.
spalding has been loyal since it was created
a spalding is like the ferrarri or lamborgini of basketball
you digg?
Ivy League schools don't give out athletic scholarships, but playing basketball will you help you get in. Call up Harvard's coach and ask him to watch one of your games. Have your coach contact Harvard's coach and give you a recommendation. Good luck.
just taking a guess here...intramural basketball came about because students like competitive sports but weren't quite good enough or just didn't want the commitment that came along with playing college ball, sooo they made a league where they can actually compete with out the rigid commitment.
i think you can start one by just getting a team together and signing them up wherever your school intramural sports are usually held.
You should use this summer to work on your weaknesses, where it be defense, rebounding, or shooting. If you improve your weakness from last season and maintain your strengths, you will have the total package of the game. This summer you should also participate in AAU (Amateur Athletic Union)basketball as well as a few summer camps to get your name out there. AAU players are highly recruited by big-time state schools, such as Tennessee, LSU, and UNC.
As far as stats go, it depends on your position. All college recruiters want scorers, but you have to bring something else to the table. Point guards bring assists and/or steals. Forwards rebounds and centers rebounds and blocks.
Talk to your HS coach too. He/she would be able to help you contact college coaches and tell you whether or not he/she thinks you are ready for the next level. He can tally up your stats and fill out multiple recruiting questionaires on colleges' websites. (KEY) Make sure your GPA and SAT's are okay too. It's not like football players, where schools are lenient on academics. If you don't get recruited to a D1 school or school of your choice, try a junior college and transfer to a bigger basketball program.
GOOD LUCK!
What? They probably do conditioning dureing the summer and once school starts...they don't start practicing until Oct and play starting Nov...they don't practice after the season is over.
Sometimes, basketball shoes are modified to weigh less, grip better, and feel comfortable.
Normal shoes will not do you any good.
The weight and grip is no good.
You WON'T be playing your best without exceptional gear.
It was designed to be the ideal size for playing the game of basketball, which was greatly improved with the invention of the basketball. Before that, it was just people running around and jumping up towards hoops that were suspended above them. That, unfortunately was not exciting enough for a fickle public, and did not sell tickets.
All joking aside, the invention of the basketball created both an outlet for exciting exercise and a form of entertainment.
Ive had this same thought myself. You should consider starting your own basketball league. Adult of Kids. Find 2 or 3 school gyms in your area or near your area and advertise in the newspaper. You would be surprised how many responses you get. Hire a good set of refs for your games (at least 2 for each game) and charge the teams ref fees.
the schedule is up now, here is a link for each month. Hope this info helps
sometime in october
Anything to do with footworkand jumping ability. Dot drills, cone drills, wall jumps, and jump roping. Jump roping is probably the most effective because it increases quickness and jumping ability.
Here is a sample of the individual practices that my team used in college:
Stretch, Warm-Up shooting, ball handling drills, shooting drills (shoot shots that a player at your position would shoot), jump rope (quickness and jumping). You can find the drills online, buy a book, steal them from a camp. The important thing is to set a goal, i.e. 300 jump shots, 50 free throws, and 15 minutes of jumping rope, and stick to it. Developing your physical ability is going to be almost as important as developing your skills.
To get better you will need to practice with good form and a varity of game situations. Practice first with one hand then the other. Practice walking with the ball and dribbling then exploding straight forward, then stop and back up. If you have to look at the ball to begin with so be it. You want to work on dribbling the ball as if it was on a string and you don't need to watch it. You want to practice running, sprinting, hesitating, stopping, chaning direcitons... go to a empty court and practice... practice, practice. Then try it in some pick up games. You want to practice simply going straight at the basket then pulling up for a jumper from a variety of distances. Once you are comfortable you can run across court, pivot, then hit the J from a variet of distances. Start close and work your way out. Then work on changing directions or throwing a fake off a dribble and take your shot. Work on your lay ups as that is critical and a normal part of the game. After you can do a good cross over, they you can work on between the legs, around the back, spin, etc. Master the cross over, hesistation, stopping, stalling, first. Then worry about the pretties moves later.
Here is another fun drill, put a chair or two on the court and simply practicing dribbling past them with a change over, cut in front of them behind them, go full speed beside, hesistate and blow past.
One of the biggest mistakes in dribbling is not going somewhere with your move. You should be covering some ground not dribbling in one place.
See how few dribbles it takes you to get down the court (around 3-5 depending upon age and size).
Yes you can practice dribbling with two balls and moving around with both... differnent speeds, cutting and slashing, etc.
Best of luck.
Goalrilla makes a good product. And tempered glass is the gold standard for hoops rims--its what every varsity athlete from high school to the pros uses.
