Skiing.....?
You are far more likely to injure yourself on a Dry Ski Slope than on real snow, however it is excellent practice and makes snow seem far easier to ski on!
As for breaking both your legs I recommend getting very drunk each night and then relaxing into all the falls!
Enjoy it!

What activities besides skiing and snowboarding are available to do at the Victorian ski resorts?
If snow isn't really your thing and you are staying up there for a few days, try to book a place that has a day spa. There are lots of lodges to stay at Hotham and some of them have day spas, you can get messages and facials too. There are also a number of bars at Hotham you could visit. Check out the Hotham homepage; www.mthotham.com.au it has all the info you will need including lodge info.
Hope this helps
Colorado (or Utah, BC, Vermont) have much better skiing than Minnesota. I've been to Lutsen on the north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota (Also Whitecap and Big Powderhorn), and they all have some decent terrain (I thought twice about going down some of the runs), but it can't compare to the Big Mountain experience. The pitch on many of the runs is decent, but the runs just aren't as long as those out west. The other thing is that the Midwest resorts don't have high speed lifts (I haven't been in a couple of years). It also gets really cold in January and February. On the plus side, your probably about 1000-2000 feet above sea level, so you won't get altitude sickness. And the resorts are inexpensive (It's been a few years since I've been).
Short answer: If you're within a few hours drive, the midwest resorts are a great option for a long weekend.
Are you using old boots?
Tib-fib fractures have become less and less common, largely related to improved equipment technology. If you have old boots, replace them. If this happened on new equipment, it's pretty much a fluke.
The advice on checking your DIN settings is good, but it really won't help with falling while you're moving slowly. If you just crank them down, the skis will pre-release when you speed up, which is more dangerous. Some other tips:
- Make sure your bindings have vertical release at the toe, and that it's enabled (many race bindings allow you to disable it).
- Many bindings have an AFD to allow clean release when the bindings do pop (Marker's is probably the best design).
- When you engage your bindings, make sure the contact surfaces on your boots are clean and not excessively worn.
- Make sure that the tolerances of the bindings are set to your boots - if you don't know what those are, get a tech at a shop to do it.
You know, I think they're the only companies that provide those activities. They are well known to Kona. I've heard through friends that they had alot of fun parasailing.
Jay will give you steep, sick runs. There is little nightlife, but if you want to ski go there...if you want a party, then go to Killington.
Mad River Glen has the most difficult runs in New England. While Smuggs has a Triple Diamond, it's not always open and MRG's sick runs rarely are closed off unless it's really boney.
Either will work if you are prepping for a trip out west.
It depends on where you are. Northern California covers a big area. Try checking in your local phone book and callling around. Also check with your friends.
Maybe, although things are looking a little dodgy at the moment. A good blizzard can fix that.
skyloft is in uxbridge, northeast of toronto.
personally I think dagmar's better for learning. Take the 401 to Salem. North on Salem to Highway 2. East on Highway 2 to Lakeridge Road. North on Lakeridge
I agree with the person who said to take a crock pot. That way you can start the dish early and still have time with your friends. My family loves this on a cold day
FRENCH BEEF BOURGUIGNON
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 pounds boneless beef chuck, cut into 1-inch pieces
2 cups carrots, cut into thin pieces about 4-inches in length
2 stalks celery, sliced
1 small yellow onion, peeled and diced
1 (14 1/2 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
1 cup white button mushrooms, chopped
1 cup dry red wine
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves, chopped
1 teaspoon fresh basil, minced
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
FOR THE SAUCE:
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons flour
Add oil to a skillet. Once the oil is hot, sear 4 or 5 pieces of beef at a time on all sides, turning each piece as it browns. Repeat with all remaining beef until it has all been browned. Place all of the beef in the crock pot stoneware and transfer the stoneware to the heating base unit. Add the carrots, celery, onion, tomatoes, mushrooms, wine, salt, thyme, basil, mustard and pepper.
Cover and cook on High setting for 2 to 4 hours or on Low setting for 5 to 8 hours, or until the vegetables and beef are very tender and the sauce is rich.
Thirty minutes before serving, combine the water and flour in a small bowl until smooth.
Turn the heat to High. Gradually add the flour and water to the soup and stir until the sauce thickens, about 3 to 5 minutes. Heat through and serve.
Makes 8 servings
Serve with a salad and some crusty french bread
I wouldn't recommend you to go skiing near Helsinki or the Lake district (I assume you meant eastern Finland) by new year, since it's not 100% sure that there will be snow. Or of course they have this fake snow that they shoot on the hills if there's no natural snow, but skiing on natural snow is much better than on fake.
So I would recommend you to go near Lapland, or even in Lapland, if you want. Levi, Ruka and Saariselkä are some of the best skiing places we have here in Finland. Saariselkä especially because you can witness the Sami culture there.
Ruka: http://www.ruka.fi/winter_eng/

Enjoy your new year.
A helmet isn't going to stop you from falling. It may prevent a serious head injury IF you fall, or help you avoid keeping your head (area) from making contact with the snow.
Best bet if you are falling is to just let it happen and not to fight it. More injuries happen when the body tenses up. If you know you are going down...relax.
Most falls are going to be sliding falls, so you're head isn't in as much danger. In 20 years I've only had 4 falls where my head came in contact with the snow/trees/rocks etc....all but one of them happened AFTER I started wearing a helmet.
Don't Fall! is the best advice. Ski in control and if you have to ease off the throttle, then do so. Not only do you keep yourself from becoming a statistic on the ski patrol chart, you avoid taking others down with you.
I like youtube myself
search Google for skiing tricks videos... tons listed
good luck
I generally leave my MP3 at home. I'm usually with other people and we talk on the lift, so it's a hassle to dig it out all the time to play with the volume.
I also hate people who f-around with their MP3 and phones WHILE they are getting on the lift. If you can't hear the liftie and there is a problem, you could get hurt. I also really hate riding a lift with someone who has their earbuds jammed in and isn't social. I don't want to share life-stories, but it's rude to not even say hello to the other person on the lift.
Having said that...I do listen to music when I ski alone too. So count me as part of the guilty, but I listen on a low volume, usually with just one earbud in and never blow off the lifties or my chair partners.
If I'm doing bumps or working on a smooth technique I listen to something that has a good rythym. If I'm just skiing along I usually listen to something mellow and relaxing.
i went to crested butte mountain last year, i loved that place. its got runs ranging from easy to pretty challenging, a halfpiple, a ramp park and lots of friendly instructors willing to help you at any time even if you're not signed up for lessons. i liked it because at the botom of the mountain there is a resort (club med) GREAT place to stay on vacation.
hey dude try to aggressive in-line skate . if you don't know what that is its when kids at the skate park roller blade . trust me it is the best way to prepare it works . Since you live in cali it should be easy to find a park. also you could add footage of you guys skating in the movie too
Mt Ruapehu (North Island), Hutt (Christchurch), Incredibles (Sth Island). There are too many ski fields!! An American friend of mine is a really good skier and he loved the ski fields near Christchurch.
You can lash them to a snowboard more-or-less as soon as they are born if you have to go.
All kids love snow,
Surely that's why YOU want to go isn't it? So whats the problem?
Its basically impossible to fall off the chairlift. If you're still scared go to the sides and hold on (go to the right if you wanna go on the right side of the slope and go to the left if you wanna go to the left side). When you get off just keep your ski tips up and go down the tiny hill at the end of the lift, then try to turn. First don't get frustrated. Second, either take lessons or learn from a friend. Only ski on a green run (green being the easiest run you can go on), unless you get really good (and I mean really good) that day you can go on blues or blacks. The first time I went skiing I wasn't that good. Make sure you wear a helmet. Depending on where you go watch out for crazy snowboarders. Make sure you have good equipment and warm clothes, because if you're cold you'll get frustrated. Don't get poles unless you know how to do nice clean turns. If you don't know how to turn you can ski pizza (pizza is where you don't turn and go straight down, do this by putting the tips of your ski's a couple inches apart you'll go slower that way). Don't cut people in line at the lifts. If its your turn in line wait for the chair lift in front of you and then go
