p pWe recently showed you a chair a target=new href="http://www.worldchanging.com/local/canada/archives/007936.html" bungie-corded/a to the back of a bicycle. Scaling up a little, how do you move an entire apartment by bicycle? The Human Powered Vehicles Operators of Ottawa (a target=new href="http://hpv.tricolour.net/"HPVOoO/a) show us how. They have been experimenting with various uses of a large bicycle trailer they originally built as a parade float to carry a Hammond organ. On the a target=new href="http://hpv.tricolour.net/organ-trailer.html"web-page devoted to the trailer/a, they document the many bike trailer 'missions' they have undertaken since building the trailer, including fetching a target=new href="http://tricolour.net/photos/2003/06/28/15-12-07.html"garden supplies/a for a local community garden, a target=new href="http://tricolour.net/photos/2003/04/12/13-31-57.html"carrying 9 drummers /a in a peace rally, and experimenting with transporting the trike (the one usually used to pull the trailer) a target=new href="http://tricolour.net/photos/2003/07/19/hpv.html"on the trailer itself/a./p pIn an article on a target=new href="http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/004712.html"Bike co-ops, trails, and Ottawa cycling/a, I told you about how the HPV group helped Richard Guy Briggs move, in May 2003, a target=new href="http://tricolour.net/photos/2003/05/10/hpv.html"an entire three bedroom apartment/a by bicycle. /p center img alt="vicphotoofrgbonsofa2003.jpg" src="http://www.worldchanging.com/local/canada/vicphotoofrgbonsofa2003.jpg" width="400" height="300" / pMoving Richard Guy Briggs (May 2007)br / (Photo courtesy Vic Gedris)br / /center/p pbr / a target=new href="http://vic.gedris.org/"Vic Gedris/a has a video of the move demonstrating that it is possible to type on a computer while it is being pulled by bicycle—the mobile office taken to new levels!/p center object width="425" height="355"param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/BzYxSz1d58Mhl=en"/paramparam name="wmode" value="transparent"/paramembed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/BzYxSz1d58Mhl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"/embed/object p"Vic Gedris demonstrates the correct usage of the mobile office"br / (Video courtesy Vic Gedris)br / /center/p p/p pbr / In 2007, the HPVOoO was at it again, conducting three missions of the furniture-moving kind in the space of three months./p pIn May, Briggs moved a second time, this time from Chinatown to Sandy Hill. /p center object width="425" height="355"param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ri_IBVvGNHohl=en"/paramparam name="wmode" value="transparent"/paramembed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ri_IBVvGNHohl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"/embed/object pMoving Richard Guy Briggs (May 2007)br / (video courtesy Mark Rehder)br / /center/p pbr / Although not entirely pedal-powered, this move involved a target=new href="http://drumbent.blogspot.com/2007/05/house-move-by-pedal-power.html"hauling some major appliances/a (two sets of fridge/stove), stereo equipment, and a very heavy load of bikes./p center img alt="second_move_250.jpg" src="http://www.worldchanging.com/local/canada/second_move_250.jpg" width="250" height="375" / pMoving Richard Guy Briggs (May 2007)br / /center/p pbr / An extra green feature of this move was the old beer fridge Mark Rehder took to the recycler's on his cargo trike./p center img alt="fridgeondrum_trike.jpg" src="http://www.worldchanging.com/local/canada/fridgeondrum_trike.jpg" width="400" height="300" / pre-Cycler recyling by tricycle (May 2007)br / (courtesy a href="http://re-cycles.ca"re-Cycles/a' Mark Rehder)br / /centerbr / /p p/p pTwo weeks later, the team was at it again, this time helping to move Greg Furlong, director of an Ottawa-based choir called a target=new href="http://www.justvoices.ca/listen.html"Just Voices/a, an activist choir with a cycling-flavoured a target=new href="http://www.justvoices.ca/songlist.html"repertoire/a. By #8220;it#8221; I refer to my interest in shoegaze. Maybe never really lost it but rather avoided it. For the past year I was trying to stray away from any melancholic frames, trying to be productive with the blues, asking drugs to be recreative, meeting different kinds of people, pleasing, bland as milk#8230; but then a breakdown/breakthrough came;  I tread through muddy waters and I run through molasses#8230; a coccoon of echo surrounding me and a collection of chords making my body shiver, the fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift. This could all change tomorrow, but why did I try to escape from it in the first place? I gaze to them eyes longer than I should #038; she lets me know I do so. 31. A Great Weekend
  32. 14 Oct 2007 at 3:46am
pWell the weekend is drawing to a close. Its 5.35pm on a clear, fine, Sunday afternoon. The weather today, and yesterday has been fantastic (mid 20's C, high 70's F. Yesterday I hired a ute (utility, small truck) and drove across to Lane Cove to pickup my brand new Trek 7200 bicycle. Its just a little too far to ride home, hence hiring the vehicle, but the bike shop, a href="http://www.renegadecycles.com.au"Renegade Cycles/a is one of (if not) the best in Sydney. That done, I scooted back to Manly Vale to pick up a home shredder (one way to get rid of the clutter), and a small bookcase (a way to store the ever increasing lever arch folders), and finally a trip to the tip to get rid of some associated clutter. I don't own a vehicle at the moment so usually hire something about once every two or three months, but I think I've told you that before./p pLast night it was hop on the bus and go into Sydney for a couple (well three) beers, then a feed, back home and just potter. /p pThis morning I slept in, then as I was about to head off to the bus to go into town, realised the ute was waiting to be returned to its rightful owners, Avis so that was done. Managed to spill petrol all over my jeans just before I delivered the truck. Stupid rule about making sure the tank is full when you return same. Just as well I don't smoke./p pAh domesticity!/p

  33. Australia Senate Report: Bicycle to reduce oil dependence
  34. 8 Feb 2007 at 12:04am
An Australian Senate committee a href="http://www.theage.com.au/news/National/Report-urges-vehicle-congestion-charge/2 007/02/07/1170524162123.html" target="win2"released its report Wednesday/a on the country's future oil supply. This report from the bipartisan Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport committee warns that the nation must act immediately to reduce its reliance on foreign oil.br /br /Cycling is presented among the options in the report to reduce oil use. Cycling is seen as a “No Regrets” option by the Committee, meaning that even if the onset of Peak Oil occurs later than expected, the community benefits from numerous social, environmental and transport outcomes inherent to cycling.br /br /div style="float:right;margin:8px;width:240px;border:2px solid black;font-family:Arial Narrow, Helvetica, Arial, san-serif;font-size:0.7em;"a href=""img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/70/220855688_5cee27b937_m.jpg"/aPhoto by a href="http://mugley.blogspot.com/"Mugley/a./div Elliot Fishman of the Australia a href="http://www.cyclingpromotion.com.au" target="win2" Cycling Promotion Fund/a highlights that “The Senate Inquiry made it clear that in addition to being an oil-free form of transport, cycling is an effective tool against our obesity and diabetes epidemics.”br /br /While the report suggests various means to increase the supply of alternative fuels, many alternative fuels can have significant environmental issues in themselves. Fishman says “Unlike many of the supply side options provided to the Senate Committee, such as coal-to-liquids, cycling represents a zero emission form of transport. Our current policy environment requires us to propose responses to Peak Oil that are greenhouse sensitive. Bicycles have no exhaust pipe.”br /br /Peak Oil may result in significant hardship for people around the world, but Cycling Promotion's Fishman believes that Australia's current drought shows that Australians can adapt. “We are on the verge of entering a petrol drought. As we approach the point at which less and less oil will be available year upon year, Australian’s will need to become fuel smart and adapt to a low oil lifestyle, just as we have done with water” says Fishman.br /br /a href="http://www.cyclingpromotion.com.au/content/view/195/9/" target="win2"Read more at Cycling Promotion Fund/a. br /br /a href="http://www.spinopsys.com/archives/848" target="win2"Spinopsys/a has in depth details and commentary on this report.br /br /a href="http://www.woj.com.au/" target="win2"Wheels of Justice/a hasn't mentioned this report yet, but I expect they'll have something up by the time my USA readers get around to this post.br /br /Discussion at a href="http://www.theoildrum.com/node/2256" target="win2"The Oil Drum/a on this important report.br /br /a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082694/"Another view/a of Australia's oil-poor future.br /br /div class="tag_list"Tags: a href="http://www.technorati.com/tag/global+warming" rel="tag nofollow"global+warming/a, a href="http://www.technorati.com/tag/bicycle" rel="tag nofollow"bicycle/a, a href="http://www.technorati.com/tag/cycling" rel="tag nofollow"cycling/a, a href="http://www.technorati.com/tag/peak+oil" rel="tag nofollow"peak+oil/a, a href="http://www.technorati.com/tag/australia" rel="tag nofollow"australia/a, a href="http://www.technorati.com/tag/bike" rel="tag nofollow"bike/a/div

Records/a is everything we like about them! They're cute, they're little, and I love them! Each of their releases are limited-run, and handrafted with loooooooove. There's a big focus on packaging and each 3" CD is packaged in a mini jewel-case inside a little brown paper bag, with a sticker on the front indicative of the release. Oh! and each released comes with a little handmade certificate of authenticity, too! They're just so fun to hold and look at, and I'm sure a lot of you can really appreciate something so cute and tangible. Anyway, there first release is the debut EP from a wonderful band called Roadside Poppies and you really must check it out!br /br /strong[MP3]:/strong a href="http://www.theclerisy.net/skatterbrain/01_Cycling_And_Crying.mp3"Roadside Poppies :: Cycling and Crying/a (Recommendeddd)br /Roadside Poppies are from Cambridge, UK and play what they like to call, "slapdash jangy pop." They cover the typical twee fare here, vocalist Matloob singing about riding bikes, love, crying, and of course, murderous neighbours. The EP's title track is my current favorite at the moment, but they're all quite good. Definitely recommended for fans of The Pocketbooks, The Math and Physics Club, and perhaps SKWBN, as well.br /br /a href="http://www.weepop.net"Order the Cycling and Crying EP from WeePOP!/abr /a href="http://www.last.fm/music/Roadside+Poppies/Cycling+and+Crying"Listen to the EP on Last.fm, too!/abr /a href="http://myspace.com/roadsidepoppies"Roadside Poppies on MySpace!/a

This was the blurb:/strong/pblockquotepstrongCasting the net: what can change our classrooms in 2007?/strong/p pThe number of Scottish educators using social media to facilitate learning is taking off. Why is it that blogs, wikis, podcasts, social bookmarking and other social media are helping to enhance the educational landscape in this small country? What changes in the nature of teaching and learning have taken place to allow for this and what can Irish educators learn from the highs and lows of this Scottish (r)evolution?/p pI'll navigate through five principles of change to reveal how we might change the shape of the classroom in 2007./p/blockquotepAs far as I can pick up from one of the conference organiser's blogs there is a a href="http://education-in-ireland.blogspot.com/2006/08/state-of-ict-in-irish-educatio nal.html"general frustration at the lack of action centrally/a to give a lead on teaching and learning that adapts to the 21st Century kid. What an opportunity for the teaching profession, though, to make changes from the bottom-up, as it were. This, I feel, is what kicked things off in Scotland, getting some senior figures on board part of the way in to bolster what the groundswell felt was right. a href="http://www.heppell.net/podcast/cycle.mp3"Stephen Heppell's innovation curve/a was spot on in this respect, where quot;hero innovatorsquot; come up with the goodies while governments and large corporations jump onto the bandwagon (bringing loads of cash - good thing, sometimes - and, depressingly often and as if it really mattered more than anything else, even more content)./p pstrongI'll be popping up my picto-slides to a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/edublogger/sets/72157594537011790/"the CESI Flickr set/a later on today, and tomorrow morning will post the outline of what I said (or, at least, meant to say). pspan style="font-size: 1.2em;"Last night I caught my third show of the current Black Sabbath tour with Dio. I thought they were done touring but then they threw a few extra dates on the schedule. They played at the Sovereign center, in Reading. This time I took my camera and capture a few video clips of the show. I was parked about 20th row, dead center, which made for a great view. Alice Cooper opened up. I am not a big Cooper fan but his show was quite entertaining/demented. He killed babies, cut throats and eventually a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=FlbHKa0ISpk "hung himself/a on stage.
