  11. Iditarod under the Northern Lights
  12. 15 Mar 2007 at 9:22pm
The end of the grueling 1,100-mile Iditarod dog sled race in Alaska came this Tuesday when Lance Mackey drove his team of huskies across the finish line on Front Street in the town of Nome, up on the Bering Sea. Nine days and five hours of battling the elements were over. Mackey kissed his lead dog Larry and broke down in tears, emoting the reverence he's had for this race his entire life. Mackey had watched his father win the fabled Iditarod in 1978. And then his brother won it in 1983. Lance grew up dreaming of mushing into Nome ahead of the pack, his beard stiff with icicles, his body aching with the fatigue of running alongside the sled in knee-deep snow, of hustling through the rest periods to care for the freeze cuts on his team's paws, of sleeping himself maybe a mere hour a day.-- Tuesday was a long time in the making for Lance Mackey...

  13. Carts of Brooklyn Racing Association Idiotarod 2007
  14. 22 Jan 2007 at 1:53pm

    Idiotarod

Idiotarod 2007, the annual Carts of Brooklyn Racing Association event where shopping cart dogsleds are pulled by humans, takes place this Saturday, January 27th, time and location to be announced.

The Iditarod is the famous long-distance race in which yelping dogs tow a sled across Alaska. The IDIOTAROD is pretty much the same thing, except that instead of dogs, it’s people, instead of sleds, it’s shopping carts, and instead of Alaska it’s New York City.

Here are some photos from the previous Idiotarods.

COBRA’s Idiotarod is similar to San Francisco’s own Urban Iditarod, which is either now defunct or they are just lazy and forgot to renew their domain (here are my previous posts on the Urban Iditarod).

Recently there was a bit of controversy when the television show CSI:NY decided to used the Idiotarod theme in their “Obsession” episode that aired last Wednesday (they changed the name to Idiot Run). Gothamist has the full story. The best part is the hilarious MP3 recoding of a phone conversation between Oscar, one of the COBRA organizers and a CSI:NY producer.

This situation is somewhat reminiscent of last year when Bacardi ripped-off The Cacophony Society Salmon event, but with that one the event’s organizers didn’t have any advance notice that they were being co-opted.

    "Lets go a-Sledding!

    I think Minnesota is cold...

    Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race

It has been called the âLast Great Race on Earthâ. German, Spanish, British, Japanese and American film crews have covered the event. Itâs not just a dog sled race, itâs a race in which unique men and woman compete. Mushers enter from all walks of life. Fishermen, lawyers, doctors, miners, artists, natives, Canadians, Swiss, French and others. From Anchorage, in south central Alaska, to Nome on the western Bering Sea coast, each team of 12 to 16 dogs and their musher cover over 1150 miles in 10 to 17 days.

    What do you know, Joe?

In dog sledding terms, what does the term âCome Geeâ and âCome Hawâ mean?

    A. To slow down and stopâ

    B. To go forward no matter what the weatherâ

    C. To turn left and right

    D. It's an early country TV show

  19. Episode 065 - HGH, CoT, WWE and the NCAAs - Who Says The Girls Can't Spell!
  20. 22 Mar 2007 at 12:10am
Today The Girls are coming to you live from the State of Shock and Awe. It is here that they have come to seek refuge as they battle with the unbelievable thought that professional wrestlers have been linked to Human Growth Hormone. Wha????? Are we now to believe that the chairs they swing are made out of foam? Are their tans fake? Is that their real hair? Do they in fact suffer from hypogonadism? Is there no sport safe from these illegal substances? Oh, wait, wrestling isn't a sport. Well then, moving on. Dogs aren't safe in the Iditarod, curling makes an appearance, and the ladies get their due in tennis. Yes, in spite of the NCAA tournament, the world of sports continues to turn. The Girls take you through the hot topics and then get down to business with the Grapefruit League. Triple plays and stalkers...now THAT's Spring Training! Who says there's no drama in pre-season in the MLB? And speaking of drama, NASCAR holds its collective breath as the Car of Tomorrow makes its official debut at Bristol this weekend. Will it level the racing field? Will it be safer? Will it go faster than a go-cart? And what the heck is it anyway? Those questions and more are answered in this week's apropos Fan-Tutor where The Girls unravel the mystery of the new universal body in NASCAR. And over in the NBA there are just 30 days till the playoffs where all the action happens in the West and the East sees how many teams below .500 will make the playoffs. Never has the league been more lopsided, but The Girls are still entertained by the likes of Steve Nash, Yao Ming, and yes, even Kobe Bryant. But no one captures their fancy like Mark Cuban. He's the classic billionaire/frat guy. Simply a work of art. And now, the story you've all been waiting for...who is winning the Fantoo Girls bracket bet? It's basically a dead heat with Robin dangerously close to being ousted and therefor possibly needing to make a World Class crank phone call. Please email your champion suggestions to The Girls for consideration as we'll know the victor this weekend. So, what about the NCAAs? Is your bracket busted? The action on the court has been entertaining, but it's the age old question of when the college players should be allowed to enter the NBA draft that has The Girls talking. Well, that and the fact that Joey Porter hauled off and slugged Levi Jones in Vegas. Apparently what happens in Vegas actually gets beamed around the internet in mere seconds, so don't kid yourself. What you do there will come back to haunt you. Just ask PacMan Jones, Britney Spears, Frank Sinatra, The Blue Man Group and Michael Jackson. And finally, in this week's IT HAS TO BE SAID, The Girls beg for the end to a rabid section of the population. So, grab your tattered bracket, your tazer and a 'Get Out of Vegas Free' card - it's time to play ball with The Girls!
