  3. Because You Need Workout Music
  4. 19 Jul 2007 at 7:22pm
pOver the last two weeks, I've picked up jogging as an addition to my workout regime. I need monotonous, beat-driven music to work out in general, but that's only enhanced with the running. I've rediscovered this mix from Shane Silkey, a href="http://www.fading-qualia.net/audio/silencio.mp3"Live at Silencio/a, which is great for that purpose. It's got just about the perfect pacing and tempo for a good 45 minute run. It also makes great use of an extended sample from em2001/em. Enjoy./p pIf you like that, here are two more mixes from him: a href="http://fading-qualia.net/audio/midnight_adrift.mp3"one/a a href="http://fading-qualia.net/audio/gradient_lacrosse.mp3"two/a/p pAnd here's a picture of a turntable cake (from a href="http://delayedagain.livejournal.com/69620.html"here/a, via Ario):br / centerimg alt="ttcake350.jpg" src="http://lineout.thestranger.com/files/2007/07/ttcake350.jpg" width="350" height="233" //center/pimg src="http://feeds.thestranger.com/~r/stranger/lineout/~4/135437900" height="1" width="1"/

  11. Another high-quality batch of free and legal MP3s from Fingertips
  12. 20 Nov 2007 at 11:24am
font face="Verdana"(as featured on a href="http://www.fingertipsmusic.com/this_weeks_finds.htm"This Week's Finds/a, Nov. 18-24)br /br /a href="http://www.tapeterecords.de/uploads/media/02_You_Can_t_Say_No_Forever.mp3" name="Lacrosse""You Can't Say No Forever" - Lacrosse/abr /Peppy, winsome, and unpretentious, "You Can't Say No Forever" launches off a nimble acoustic intro, picks up a boy-girl pair of lead singers singing maybe not exactly in tune all the time, a drum kit, an electric guitar or two, an endearing synthesizer (don't miss it), and a nice fat horn line before it's all through in a scant three minutes six seconds. The almost but not quite zany energy is the infectious result of a delightful sing-song-y melody and six musicians playing with great bustling spirit--as they get going, I can all but picture the jouncing body parts working things into a dust cloud, like some cartoon animal band, setting up the climactic moment (at 2:25) when the instruments stop on a dime and the vocalists join together for a heartfelt "ba-da-da-da-da-da," which repeats as the piece draws to its lively close. We have by the way yet another band from Sweden here--Lacrosse is from Stockholm, and are signed to a href="http://www.fingertipsmusic.com/smaller_labels.htm#Tapete" STYLE="text-decoration:none"/fontfont face="Verdana" FONT COLOR="006600"Tapete Records/a/FONTfont face="Verdana", the German label with an enviable habit of releasing wonderful music. "You Can't Say No Forever" is from the CD iThis New Year Will Be For You and Me/i, which was released in Europe this month. The MP3 is via the a href="http://www.tapeterecords.de" STYLE="text-decoration:none"/fontfont face="Verdana" COLOR="006600"Tapete site/a/FONTfont face="Verdana".br /br /a href="http://www.beggarsgroupusa.com/mp3/celebration_evergreen.mp3"name="Celebration" "Evergreen" - Celebration/abr /With its carnival organ, idiosyncratic drum beat, cagey structure, and elusive vocals--not only is the singer hard to understand, but you might not initially realize that a woman and not a tenor is singing--this is truly an unusual song. I've been sitting with it for quite a while already; it was one of those that fascinated me at an unconscious level, leaving my conscious mind a bit perplexed as to why I kept listening and listening. I'm still not sure I know, exactly, but it definitely has something to do with the unique texture created by the swirling instrumentation, scuttly drumming, Katrina Ford's reverberant voice, and maybe most of all the seductively repetitive melody--listen to how Ford stays centered on one note a whole lot of the time; the furtive dives she takes to lower pitches somehow serve to further emphasize the unmoving primary note. And I may be crazy but deep within the kaleidoscopic organ sound I'm sensing the beating heart of an old-time soul record, as I could swear I'm hearing a Booker T. and the M.G.s/Stax Records reference in the mix somewhere. "Celebration" is the lead track off this Baltimore-based trio's second CD, iThe Modern Tribe/i, which was released last month on a href="http://www.4ad.com" STYLE="text-decoration:none"/fontfont face="Verdana" COLOR="006600"4AD Records/a/FONTfont face="Verdana". MP3 courtesy of Beggars Group, 4AD's parent label.br /br /a href="http://www.fanaticpromotion.com/mp3s/katetuckerandthesonsofsweden/katetuckerand thesonsofsweden-fasterthancars.mp3" name="Tucker""Faster Than Cars Drive" - Kate Tucker the Sons of Sweden/abr /The combination of tough and lonely is an appealing one, and Tucker's got it going here, with a tough and lonely shuffle that sounds a bit like Patty Griffin trying to do a Mazzy Star imitation, with Neko Case for a teacher. Tucker's got an achy edge to her breathy voice, while her able band creates a world of subtle feeling behind her via a series of fluid changes in their reverb-laced playing. Keep your ear on the drummer in particular, who drives the one obvious, and central, change: the apparent time shift of the chorus, which isn't a time shift at all, simply an ear-arresting rhythmic trick. This outfit, by the way, is actually inot/i from Sweden, but from the Seattle neighborhood of Ballard--which was the traditional center of the city's Scandanavian community (thus, it would seem, the band name). The Sons of Sweden, by the way, were a band called the Dark Ages before joining forces with Tucker, who has herself released one solo CD before this one. "Faster Than Cars Drive" is from the self-titled debut CD as an ensemble--a disc produced by Ryan Hadlock, who has worked with Blonde Redhead and Metric, among other bands. The CD was self-released at the end of October, on the band's Red Valise Records imprint./font

  13. Hi, this is Elvis Presley

At a truck stop, for two dollars, I picked up a cassette of his early recordings. Much to the chagrin of many, who seemed to prefer NKOTB or some similar pap, this tape got a fair airing on the bus stereo system. Of course I already knew of him from his movies, which were shown back-to-back every weekend afternoon on Australian television in the eighties, but this was my introduction to his tunes. I don't have the cassette to hand but it was probably all his Sun recordings, which is a damn good place to start with Elvis. br /br /From shortly after he made those recordings, for today's post, I'm featuring a handful of interviews he did while on tour. Elvis' ascent to fame was rapid. From the release of his first single in July, 1954 to him being the top selling recording artist in the US was just a couple of years. These interviews take place when he was right on the cusp of full blown superstardom. He is a phenomenon. He just gets bigger and bigger with every record he releases, every town he plays and every television appearance. I find it fascinating to listen to a young, and relatively unguarded, Elvis speak humbly and politely, answering all sorts of personal questions, while a storm is brewing around him of a size that no one could possibly fathom.br /br /The first selection is also the latest. It was recorded in Hollywood on August 29, 1956 and included on a gold 7" flexidisc that came out with a magazine called Elvis Answers Back - The Truth About Me. He's incredibly frank and open; when he talks about being an only child it's spine tingling.br /br /Just over one year earlier, Elvis was interview by Mae Axton in Jacksonville. Axton would go on to co-write Heartbreak Hotel and do some PR for The Colonel (Tom Parker), but in 1955 she was still a high school teacher. Elvis is as polite as ever but he's fibbing when he says that he "never did sing anywhere in public in my life, till I made this first record".br /br /Bob Neil, a WMPS radio DJ and Elvis' first manager, recorded this interview with Elvis and his band (Scotty Moore and Bill Black) to promote an upcoming show in Texarkana. It's a casual affair with Elvis referring to the interviewer as "Bobert" and Black simply plugging the Elvis photographs he will be selling for a quarter at the show. Neil mentions another rising star, Johnny Cash, who's apparently "a swell young fella".br /br /In April, 1956, for radio station WNOE in Wichita Falls, Jay Thompson recorded this interview where Elvis recalls how he was driving a truck and studying to be an electrician before getting mixed up in the music business. At the interview's conclusion Elvis thanks the interviewer and all the wonderful people who have been buying his records and coming out to see his shows... "that's really what makes, anybody, is the people, you can make 'em or break 'em".br /br /From Elvis's dressing room at the Sawyer Auditorium in Lacrosse, Wisconsin comes the next selection. Elvis sounds a little tired as he goes through the motions of answering the same questions. After four minutes you can hear the hoards of screaming girls trying to break the door down.br /br /Just two days later, on May 16, 1956, Elvis recorded an interview with Ray Green in Little Rock, Arkansas. Green asks him how it feels to be "right up there on top... right with the best of them." According to Elvis, "it feels pretty good".br /br /a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-_6BUtyWK4" target="blank"YouTube - Elvis' first TV appearance/abr /a href="http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/entertainment/music-gigs/news/article2859595. ece" target="blank"Belfast Telegraph - Elvis weird and wonderful facts/a

  23. Duke Lacrosse Lessons
  24. 19 Sep 2007 at 5:22pm
It was a travesty: crude, privileged white-boy lacrosse players at Duke, raping a black woman for kicks. And then it was a different travesty: innocent young men railroaded by a politically-ambitious prosecutor, and a public too willing to believe. Race and class stereotypes turned on their heads and unleashed with a vengeance. A media machine and academic critics ready to send innocents to prison for years. That case is not closed. This hour, On Point: the lessons of the Duke no-rape story from the author of a scathing new book, the faculty, and the coach who was sent packing.
